A Generalized Impure Public Good and Linear Characteristics Model of Green Consumption

چکیده
This paper provides a general framework for understanding consumer behavior related to goods and services that may be considered environmentally friendly, ethically produced, fairly traded, or some combination thereof. This paper generalizes the impure public good model and derives its comparative static properties. The model accounts for any number of impure public (green) goods and joint production of any number of both private and public characteristics. The generalization provides a bridge between the impure public good model and the well-known linear characteristics model, both of which are special cases of the model developed here. The results show how demand for green goods and characteristics such as environmental quality depends on wealth, exogenously given levels of public goods, and the technologies of joint production. The e¤ects of changes in technology depend critically on whether jointly produced characteristics are complements or substitutes in consumption. Several of the results are rather counterintuitive and di¤er in meaningful ways from existing models of impure public goods and linear characteristics. The results also illuminate several reasons for greater caution about whether it is reasonable to assume that green goods and services are necessarily bene cial for the provision of public goods.

Impure public goods and the comparative statics of environmentally friendly consumption
This paper develops an impure public good model to analyze the comparative statics of environmentally friendly consumption. ‘‘Green’’ products are treated as impure public goods that arise through joint production of a private characteristic and an environmental public characteristic. The model is distinct from existing impure public good models because of the way it considers the availability ...
متن کاملGreen goods: are they good or bad news for the environment? Evidence from a laboratory experiment on impure public goods
An impure public good is a commodity that combines public and private characteristics in fixed proportions. Green goods such as dolphin-friendly tuna or green electricity programs provide increasingly popular examples of impure public goods. We design an experiment to test how the presence of impure public goods affects pro-social behaviour. We set parameters, such that from a theoretical point...
متن کاملGreen Markets and Private Provision of Public Goods
This paper develops a general model of private provision of a public good that includes the option to consume an impure public good. I use the model to investigate positive and normative consequences of “green markets.” Green markets give consumers a new choice: instead of simply consuming a private good and making a donation to an environmental public good, consumers can purchase an impure pub...
متن کاملPrivate provision of environmental public goods: Household participation in green-electricity programs
Green-electricity programs provide an opportunity to study private provision of an environmental public good in a field setting. The first part of this paper develops a theoretical framework to analyze household decisions about voluntary participation in green-electricity programs. We consider different participation mechanisms and show how they relate to existing theory on either pure or impur...
متن کاملSimulation and prediction of the green tax effect on energy consumption and intensity in Iran using a genetic algorithm
Taxation as one of the safest ways of government financing has always been one of the financial tools of the government along with public sector expenses to achieve government objectives, and since the world's largest environmental damage is due to energy consumption, imposing environmental taxes on energy consumption can reduce the amount of environmental damage. Therefore, considering the ...
